Christian Ponder now is the Minnesota Vikings’ No. 1 quarterback, a league source stated Tuesday afternoon, and will make his beginning debut this weekend at property against the Green Bay Packers.
Vikings coach Leslie Frazier created the decision this week and has notified Donovan McNabb, whom the coach hand-picked to come in and attempt to aid Minnesota steer clear of a rebuilding year. But the 34-year-old veteran has struggled to come across consistency in a new offensive method and ranks 29th in the NFL in touchdown passes (four), 26th in passing yards (1,026) and 19th in completion percentage (60.three).
The sports agency that represents Ponder tweeted Tuesday night its congratulations to its client, whom the Vikings drafted out of Florida State with the No. 12 overall pick in April.
“Congrats to #Vikings client @cponder7 for earning the start for next week’s game,” SportsTrust Advisors posted to its account.
A Vikings spokesman told The Associated Press that the team wouldn’t comment till Wednesday, when Frazier previously had said he would make an announcement. Players had been off Tuesday, so McNabb and Ponder weren’t readily available for comment.
Ponder relieved McNabb in the fourth quarter of Sunday night’s 39-10 loss to the Chicago Bears and went 9-of-17 passing for 99 yards.
“For a guy who gets limited reps in practice, it seems he had a excellent grasp, like we believed he would, of our offense,” Frazier stated Monday, 1 day following the loss dropped Minnesota to 1-five.
For the 1st 5 weeks of the season, Frazier steadfastly stood behind McNabb, defending him amid all the criticism from fans and media. But Frazier backed off of that Monday.
“The only qualifier is what’s ideal for our team, and that will be the criteria we use when we sit down and continue these discussions more than the next couple days,” stated the coach, who has a close relationship with McNabb dating to their days together in Philadelphia.
Now it’s Ponder’s job. Frazier said Monday that he wasn’t interested in rotating quarterbacks in and out.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.

If former Vikings coach Brad Childress is hoping to embark on a career in the media, we suggest coming up with a slightly a lot more delicate way of expressing himself.
Of course, if tact had been contained in Chilly’s bag of tricks, he possibly would nonetheless be the coach of the Vikings.
Throughout a check out to the nerve center of NFL Network, Childress spoke about the ill-fated addition via trade for receiver Randy Moss. Childress, via NFL.com, stated that Moss “walked in the locker room and vomited on it.”
In numerous respects, Childress’ assessment is accurate. But there’s a way to convey that thought without having generating the kind of mental image that no quantity of bleach poured into the ear canals can erase.
All in all, Childress was the newest example of the Peter Principle, as applied to pro football. Some coordinators can excel at the fundamentally different job requirements of the next level on the coaching ladder, and some can’t. Thanks to the choice to ignore injury concerns and pick Adrian Peterson with the seventh selection in 2007 and the availability of Brett Favre in 2009, Childress lasted longer than he possibly really should have. The inability pre-Favre to craft a legitimate passing attack despite getting a residence-run threat at tailback falls squarely on Chilly’s shoulders, specially given that it was his call to trade up in 2006 to get quarterback Tarvaris Jackson, who despite the existing effort of the Seahawks to prop him up ultimately couldn’t take benefit of the truth that defenses had been wholly committed to stopping the run.
In the finish, Childress was an additional Parcells-style tough talker, but with no pelts on the wall to prompt the powers-that-be to perpetually appear the other way. From the snide comments directed to Daunte Culpepper regarding the rehab of a severe knee injury to the handling of Troy Williamson soon after his grandmother died to the gratuitous sarcasm directed at Jeff George when he simply wanted a opportunity to show that he can nonetheless play to the failure to let ownership know Moss had been cut, Chilly ended up becoming his own worst enemy.
Indeed, some Vikings players possibly would say that Chilly did what he now accuses Moss of doing, but over a longer period of time.

When Vikings coach Leslie Frazier joined PFT Live on the Monday soon after the 2011 draft, he gushed about the addition of Notre Dame tight end Kyle Rudolph in round two. Frazier said that Rudolph, who slid to the second round due in component to a severe hamstring injury suffered last year, has the prospective to be a Pro Bowler early in his career.
But Rudolph’s performance at the NFL level hinges on the healing of the hamstring. Whilst Rudolph and the Vikings are confident that he’ll be back to 100 percent, but Tom Pelissero of 1500espn.com has spoken with a medical professional who has supplied a much more guarded assessment.
Dr. J.R. Rudzki, who has worked with the St. Louis Rams and other skilled sports teams, told Pelissero that patients suffering hamstring tendon avulsions “have roughly a 70 to 85 percent of becoming able to return to their desired level of sports activity.”
Added Rudzki regarding Rudolph, “For him, certainly, he has functional demands and an activity level as an elite expert athlete that are significant and leave little room for residual weakness.”
But as Pelissero points out, Rudzki hasn’t examined or treated Rudolph. Vikings doctors and other people have, with Rudolph being checked not as soon as but twice by doctors in Indianapolis at the Scouting Combine and the subsequent medical re-check. And Rudolph was able to perform sufficiently properly at his Pro Day workout to help the Vikings really feel comfy about employing a second-round choose on a position that, for now, is much more of a luxury than it is a will need.
Although this reality won’t quit Rudzki or other doctors from welcoming the opportunity to get their names in the media when given a opportunity to opine on the condition of athletes they haven’t examined, it’s an crucial fact to maintain in mind when taking into consideration such comments.
