Vikings CB Cook Arrested on Domestic Battery Charges

Police arrested Minnesota Vikings cornerback Chris Cook on domestic assault charges early Saturday, meaning he’s all but particular to miss this weekend’s game against the Green Bay Packers.

Cook was booked into Hennepin County Jail, exactly where he is being held with no bail, according to the Star Tribune. He will not seem in court till Monday morning.

The Vikings wouldn’t confirm to NFL.com on Saturday that Cook has officially been ruled out.

Eden Prairie police spokeswoman Katie Beal says the 24-year-old was arrested on two domestic assault chargers without incident following an individual known as 911 about 2 a.m. Saturday to report hearing men and women across the street yelling and screaming.

Cook is in his second year with the Vikings and was expected to start off against the undefeated Packers in place of the injured Antoine Winfield. Cook’s absence leaves the Vikings’ secondary incredibly thin.

The team issued a statement in response to the news: “The Minnesota Vikings are aware of the incident involving Chris Cook. We take this matter really seriously and are still gathering all the particulars of the incident. We will not have any further comment at this time.”

In March, Cook was accused of pulling a gun on a neighbor in the course of a verbal altercation although near his mother’s house in Lynchburg, Va. He was identified not guilty on a misdemeanor gun charge.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Adrian Peterson Regrets “Modern-day Slavery” Remarks

Only days after the lockout started, Vikings running back Adrian Peterson made a major stir by saying that pro football is “modern-day slavery.”

He addressed the remarks for the first time on Friday.

“I regret using those words because obviously there is nothing, absolutely nothing that you can compare to slavery,” Peterson said, per Judd Zulgad of the Minneapolis Star Tribune.  “It stands alone.  It was something that I should have used better wording to put that out there.  But it’s spoiled milk, it’s old and it’s over with.”

But, of course, the apology was equivocal.  Peterson said the comments were “taken out of context.”  Even though he seems to accept some of the blame for allowing it to be taken out of context.

“It was [taken] out of context and it was on me for putting it out there to make it available to be taken out of context,” Peterson said.

I wonder how many people who use the phrase “out of context” as a way of fully or partially shifting responsibility for their words even know what “out of context” means.  Taking “it’s modern-day slavery” out of context, in this specific context, would entail lifting the words “[i]t’s modern-day slavery” from something like “I disagree with anyone who says it’s modern-day slavery.”

In cases like this one, “out of context” usually is a synonym for “I disagree with anyone who uses my words against me.”

Star Tribune Finds Itself in Middle of Stadium Debate

Star Tribune finds itself in middle of stadium debate

When Vikings V.P. of public affairs and stadium development Lester Bagley appeared on PFT Live earlier this week, he suggested at 1 point that the Minneapolis Star Tribune would like to see the proposed Arden Hills web site for a new stadium fail, so that the venue will be built in Minneapolis.

“The Star Tribune has had a steady diet of articles, editorials hammering us since I believe they would prefer us to be in Minneapolis,” Bagley said.  “So, they’ve been supportive of Vikings stadium solutions until we selected Ramsey County as our partner.”

Sensitive to the perception that the Star Tribune is deciding on sides in a question that, if not answered with a new stadium in Minnesota, could result in the Vikings leaving the state, Star Tribune editor Nancy Barnes has written a column defending the paper’s role in reporting on the facts and in articulating opinions.

Complicating matters for the Star Tribune is the fact that one of the proposed internet sites would entail purchasing land presently owned by the Star Tribune, a fact that arguably really should be disclosed at the leading or the bottom — or both — of every post and column written by the paper.

We haven’t been inspecting items from the Star Tribune for evidence of bias, but the fact that an whole Sunday column has been devoted to the issue suggests that a person other than Bagley has noticed a slant in the coverage.  And we’re not certain that an write-up that amounts to saying “take our word for it” in 898 much more words than that will persuade Bagley or other people to conclude otherwise.
