Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers Honor Joe Montana, Steve Young

San Francisco (NFL/Newsfeed) – Two generations of star NFL quarterbacks combined in San Francisco on Friday night as Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady joined Joe Montana, Steve Young and Jim Plunkett at a charity occasion hosted by NBC’s Bob Costas.

That’s eight Super Bowl MVP awards amongst the five of them, if you’re keeping score.

Brady and Rodgers, who grew up in the Bay area, each talked of childhoods spent idolizing Montana and Young.

“We had been fairly high from the prime of the stadium,” Brady mentioned, according to CSNBayArea.com. “We needed binoculars to see what was going on, but there was nothing a lot more thrilling than being at the games and watching Joe and Steve. Any young kid expanding up at that time wanted to be like these two guys. It’s very an honor be to sitting right here with those two.”

It was also a uncommon double sighting of Montana and Young, who engaged in possibly the greatest quarterback controversy of all. The two had been seated next to every single other on stage.

The occasion was held at UC San Francisco and organized by former 49ers offensive lineman Harris Barton. It was expected to raise up to $ 750,000 for tumor study at UCSF, Initial Tee of San Francisco, Monterey County and Silicon Valley, and Champion Charities.

Steve Smith: Saints Player Admitted He Targeted Me

Carolina Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith wasn’t shocked at all when the New Orleans Saints’ bounty plan came to light this offseason. The longtime NFC South rival said he’s “always known” Gregg Williams’ defenses attempt to hurt opposing players.

“I in fact had an altercation with a guy who told me firsthand,” Smith stated Tuesday on NFL.com’s “Dave Dameshek Football System,” though he didn’t name the Saints player. “I was going out of bounds, and the guy went for my ankle. I said, ‘Hey, man, cut that out.’ He’s like, ‘Well, we get fined if we don’t go after your legs when you go out of bounds.’ … And truly this past year, this last game when we played them, I had a small conversation with Gregg Williams. … He took responsibility, he was saying it wasn’t proper, but that’s who he was.”

We’re past the point of getting shocked by the Saints’ activities at this point. Would it seem out of character for Williams to have his players spend modest fines if they didn’t play with an edge?

The Carolina-New Orleans rivalry was re-ignited final season by a scuffle following a Smith touchdown celebration (not to mention a late hit by Saints safety Roman Harper). We won’t have to wait long to see if Smith’s words additional inflame the matchup: The Saints head to Carolina in Week two next season.

The Saints just have to hope they have enough non-suspended players to field a defense that day.

Steve Mariucci: Lions Just Needed to Listen to Their Scouts

Steve Mariucci: Lions just needed to listen to their scouts

Former Lions coach Steve Mariucci took what appears like a shot at the man who hired him and fired him — Matt Millen — in explaining how Detroit’s football fortunes have lastly turned around.

Mariucci didn’t rip Millen personally, but he did praise Millen’s successor atop the Lions’ front office, Martin Mayhew, for keeping a lot of of the Lions’ scouts on the staff when he took more than for Millen — and for following the assistance of those scouts.

“There’s some very good scouts there,” Mariucci stated, per the Detroit Totally free Press. “I’ve been in a lot of draft rooms around the league, and the Detroit Lions have some excellent scouts and they just needed to be listened to. And so Martin Mayhew does that. He takes their evaluations and their opinions to heart, as he does with the coaches, and he makes an executive choice based on a lot of details. And that’s exactly where he actually excels.”

That sure sounds like Mariucci is suggesting that Millen, who had final say in the Lions’ draft room from 2001 to 2008, didn’t listen to the scouts on high-profile failed picks like Charles Rogers, Joey Harrington and Mike Williams. But Mariucci, possibly wishing to keep away from the scent of sour grapes soon after Millen fired him in 2005, tiptoed away from criticizing Millen and instead focused on praising Mayhew.

“His method has been productive so far, so let’s just leave it at that,” Mariucci said of Mayhew. “He’s carried out a nice job.”

It’s been a lengthy time given that everyone has been able to say that about the Lions’ front office.

Eagles Sign Ex-Giant Steve Smith

Eagles sign ex Giant Steve Smith

The Philadelphia Eagles aren’t done signing free agents.

Wide receiver Steve Smith, formerly of the NFC East rival New York Giants, has signed with Philadelphia, the Eagles announced.

Details of the contract haven’t been announced, but it’s reportedly a one-year deal, and the Eagles apparently didn’t have to break the bank to get Smith, who may have thought his best chance at a major payday would come from signing with a good team now and then testing free agency again in March.

The Giants were interested in bringing Smith back, but they were also concerned that it would be a long time before Smith’s injured knee was sufficiently healed that he could return any time soon.

The Eagles’ medical staff apparently checked out Smith’s knee and had a more optimistic diagnosis than the Giants’ medical staff.

If Smith can contribute, he’ll be yet another outstanding free agency addition in Philadelphia. He had a sensational season in 2009, catching 107 passes for 1,220 yards and seven touchdowns, and he was off to a very good start in 2010 before catching just one pass in the second half of the season.

If everyone is healthy and ready to go, a receiving corps of Smith, DeSean Jackson, Jeremy Maclin and Jason Avant would be one o the best in the NFL.

Carolina’s Steve Smith Teams of Choice: Baltimore, San Diego

Carolinas Steve Smith teams of choice: Baltimore, San Diego

Late last season, Carolina’s Steve Smith went to Panthers owner Jerry Richardson’s residence and asked to be traded.

Tom Sorensen of the Charlotte Observer confirms this with several sources, and we’ve seen it elsewhere.  Before the lockout started, the Panthers reportedly began to shop Smith around quietly.

Even though Smith has mostly stayed quiet on the problem this offseason, his desire to leave the team appears fairly obvious. And the Panthers seem open to the idea.

If Smith is dealt, Sorensen writes that his teams of option consist of the Chargers and Ravens.   Essentially, he desires to go to a playoff contender.

The Chargers had been rumored in connection to Smith earlier this offseason, and make a lot of sense since they could use another veteran receiver.

Syracuse Signs Steve “Spygate” Scarnecchia

 Syracuse signs Steve Spygate Scarnecchia

Steve Scarnecchia was fired from the Denver Broncos for taping the San Francisco 49ers’ walk-by way of practice last year. But his function in “Spygate II” didn’t end Scarnecchia’s football career.

Syracuse has announced that Scarnecchia is the football team’s new video coordinator, and Syracuse head coach Doug Marrone said he stands totally behind his new employ.

“I am 100 percent specific he is the proper man for this job,” Marrone told the Post-Common. “Steve knows he produced a mistake. He acknowledged his mistake and faced the consequences. I am convinced that he has learned his lesson. Steve is a Syracuse University graduate, and I am thrilled to have him back at his alma mater.”

Calling what Scarnecchia did a “mistake” might be letting him off a little straightforward: It’s not like Scarnecchia accidentally left his camera running and turned it off as soon as he realized. Scarnecchia surreptitiously taped the 49ers’ practice and gave the tape to Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels, in clear violation of NFL guidelines. And the NFL considers Scarnecchia a repeat offender based on his prior function with the Patriots’ video department, though Scarnecchia was actually with the Jets, not the Patriots, at the time that the very first “Spygate” scandal broke.

But Marrone says he’s confident Scarnecchia has learned his lesson. If he hasn’t by now, it is secure to say he never will.
