Indianapolis (NFL/Newsfeed) – Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay expects to sign Andrew Luck sooner than later, the Indianapolis Star reports.

“It’s one thing that really should be done swiftly,” Irsay mentioned Saturday evening. “There shouldn’t be a hard approach with that.”

The Colts are expected to ink top-choose Luck to a 4-year, $ 22 million contract, in line with the funds slotted for the leading draft pick.

“The sooner the better on all the draft picks,” Irsay stated. “We’re going to present all the picks (gives) and say, ‘Here is the deal. Period.’ ”

Luck expects to join the Colts on June 7 following he finishes classes at Stanford, per NFL guidelines.

Matt Leinart looks to be on the move once again.

Jaguars sign ex-Giants cornerback Aaron Ross to 3-year deal

Aaron Ross is heading to Jacksonville.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the Jaguars have reached an agreement with Ross, a free agent cornerback, on a 3-year deal worth up to $ 15.three million.

Peyton Manning is finalizing a contract with the Denver Broncos, a league supply told NFL Network’s Michael Lombardi on Monday.

Manning named Broncos vice president of football operations John Elway on Monday to inform him of his decision.

Chargers roll on depressing night in Jacksonville

The nicest moment on a depressing night for Jaguars fans in Jacksonville came when they showed owner Wayne Weaver on the Jumbotron.

The fans stood as 1 and applauded Weaver for bringing pro football to town. This was his national television send-off, with the sale of the team expected to turn into official subsequent month.

Gabbert’s final numbers didn’t look terrible simply because of a 48-yard shovel pass to Maurice Jones-Drew, but the rookie’s weaknesses showed up in a scoreless second half against a terrible defense. He nonetheless averaged under six yards-per-attempt. There’s zero pocket presence or accuracy. Absolutely nothing goes down the field. It’s not all about the lack of weapons.

5. Most likely the most depressing factor we saw all night: A sign imploring the Jaguars to trade for Tim Tebow. It’s been that kind of year for the 3-9 Jaguars.

David Garrard is taking it upon himself to clear up any misinformation that may well exist about his football future.

The former Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback was in discussions with the Miami Dolphins this week, NFL Network insider Jason La Canfora reported, but a contract didn’t come to fruition, and the team rather signed Sage Rosenfels to replace injured starter Chad Henne on the roster. Then other reports surfaced that Garrard lacked a desire to play again.

Not so, says Garrard. He does want to play, just not for the Dolphins under the existing set of circumstances, he told ESPN.

“There’s been a lot of speculation about me that I don’t appreciate,” Garrard stated Saturday. “I was going to lay low with the media, but I really feel I have to protect my name. I just want to make it clear that I’m a football player, I want to be with a team and be with an organization that will be as committed to me as I will be to them.”

Given the Dolphins’ -four record and the lack of guaranteed income they brought to the table, Garrard just passed on the provide.

“They were not willing to guarantee me the kind of funds that reflects a genuine commitment and what I believe would defend me from becoming cut twice in one season,” Garrard stated. “That doesn’t mean I’m one of those players who thinks I’m worthy of another big pay day. My thoughts are the funds I did want guaranteed the rest of the year was miniscule with respect to what I achieved over my career. It wasn’t outrageous.”

Garrard later added: “Here’s the bottom line: I’m staying in shape. I’m taking care of my body, my legs, my arm — I’m getting standard massage treatments. I’m ready to play. I’m ready for the right chance. This (with the Dolphins) just isn’t the correct chance.”

Garrard, 33, surprisingly was released by the Jaguars on the eve of the typical season after 5 seasons as the starter in Jacksonville. He has thrown for 16,003 yards and 89 touchdowns with 54 interceptions in nine seasons, all with the Jaguars.

Former Giants teammates Plaxico Burress and Tiki Barber each tried to get back into the NFL soon after long absences this season. Burress was welcomed back with open arms and signed with the Jets. Barber was largely ignored and has been described as devastated and flabbergasted that no 1 will sign him.

It turns out that Burress is flabbergasted that no 1 will sign Barber, too.

“It’s crazy,” Burress told the New York Post of Barber’s failure to uncover a team. “He’s better than half the backs in the league.”

It is accurate that when Barber and Burress last played together — in 2006 — Barber was far better than half the backs in the league. You could make a case that Barber, who topped 2,000 yards from scrimmage in each of his last three seasons, was far better than all the other backs in the league. But it is 2011 now, and the concept that Barber, at age 36, is nonetheless far better than half the backs in the league is farfetched.

Still, Burress holds out hope for his old teammate.

“I’m really surprised he’s not on somebody’s roster,” Burress said. “But it’s just Week 4. Perhaps somebody will call him.”

That’s doubtful. The Dolphins named him in for a workout, and after obtaining a appear at Barber declined to bring him into coaching camp. And no other team has even gone so far as to kick the tires on Tiki. If any NFL team believed Burress might be correct that Barber is much better than half the backs in the league right now, Barber would be in the league proper now.

The Philadelphia Eagles aren’t done signing free agents.

Wide receiver Steve Smith, formerly of the NFC East rival New York Giants, has signed with Philadelphia, the Eagles announced.

Details of the contract haven’t been announced, but it’s reportedly a one-year deal, and the Eagles apparently didn’t have to break the bank to get Smith, who may have thought his best chance at a major payday would come from signing with a good team now and then testing free agency again in March.

The Giants were interested in bringing Smith back, but they were also concerned that it would be a long time before Smith’s injured knee was sufficiently healed that he could return any time soon.

The Eagles’ medical staff apparently checked out Smith’s knee and had a more optimistic diagnosis than the Giants’ medical staff.

If Smith can contribute, he’ll be yet another outstanding free agency addition in Philadelphia. He had a sensational season in 2009, catching 107 passes for 1,220 yards and seven touchdowns, and he was off to a very good start in 2010 before catching just one pass in the second half of the season.

If everyone is healthy and ready to go, a receiving corps of Smith, DeSean Jackson, Jeremy Maclin and Jason Avant would be one o the best in the NFL.
