Dayton Leaves Door Open for a Vikings Stadium Special Session

Dayton leaves door open for a Vikings stadium special session

The Minnesota Legislature has, via a special session, solved the state’s spending budget mess.  But the Vikings stadium situation continues to be unresolved as the team enters the lame-duck season of its Metrodome lease.

On Tuesday, Governor Mark Dayton expressed reluctance to call a second particular session just before the Legislature returns to its typical schedule in 2012.  On Wednesday, he seemed to hint that, with the correct bill to present to the politicians, perhaps he would.

Dayton known as the proposed plan to build a stadium in Ramsey County “incomplete and unsatisfactory,” according to the Connected Press.  But Dayton stated that he will “seriously consider” bringing the Legislature back if/when he’s presented with a stadium bill that represents a “good deal for Minnesota.”

So there you have it.  Unless the powers-that-be can conjure up a “good deal for Minnesota,” the Vikings will be saying “good bye to Minnesota.”

Minnesota Budget Compromise Opens Door for Stadium Deal

Minnesota budget compromise opens door for stadium deal

Weeks of hardheaded impasse finally appear to be leading to compromise, both for the NFL and for the state of Minnesota.

A spending budget deal has been reached in the Land of 10,000 Lakes, right after Democratic Governor Mark Dayton produced substantial concessions to Republican lawmakers.

Once finalized, the agreement will end a government shutdown that started on July 1.  And it will offer the Vikings with a clear path toward attempting to parlay a deal with Ramsey County into an agreement with the state that would keep the Vikings in Minnesota indefinitely.

Star Tribune Finds Itself in Middle of Stadium Debate

Star Tribune finds itself in middle of stadium debate

When Vikings V.P. of public affairs and stadium development Lester Bagley appeared on PFT Live earlier this week, he suggested at one point that the Minneapolis Star Tribune would like to see the proposed Arden Hills web site for a new stadium fail, so that the venue will be built in Minneapolis.

“The Star Tribune has had a steady diet of articles, editorials hammering us since I believe they would prefer us to be in Minneapolis,” Bagley said.  “So, they’ve been supportive of Vikings stadium solutions until we selected Ramsey County as our partner.”

Sensitive to the perception that the Star Tribune is deciding on sides in a question that, if not answered with a new stadium in Minnesota, could result in the Vikings leaving the state, Star Tribune editor Nancy Barnes has written a column defending the paper’s role in reporting on the facts and in articulating opinions.

Complicating matters for the Star Tribune is the reality that one of the proposed websites would entail purchasing land currently owned by the Star Tribune, a reality that arguably need to be disclosed at the top or the bottom — or both — of every post and column written by the paper.

We haven’t been inspecting items from the Star Tribune for evidence of bias, but the reality that an whole Sunday column has been devoted to the problem suggests that somebody other than Bagley has noticed a slant in the coverage.  And we’re not sure that an post that amounts to saying “take our word for it” in 898 a lot more words than that will persuade Bagley or other people to conclude otherwise.
