JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Jacksonville Jaguars coach Mike Mularkey insists he wanted quarterback Tim Tebow.

Jaguars sign ex-Giants cornerback Aaron Ross to 3-year deal

Aaron Ross is heading to Jacksonville.

The Jacksonville Jaguars have fired longtime head coach Jack Del Rio, a team source told NFL Network insider Jason La Canfora.

Del Rio informed his coaching staff of the selection on Tuesday, according to the source. He told them that Jaguars owner Wayne Weaver has tips about how to proceed, but Del Rio was uncertain who would replace him.

A source told NFL Network’s Albert Breer that defensive coordinator Mel Tucker will take over as interim head coach. Tucker joined the Jaguars in 2009 following four seasons as an assistant with the Cleveland Browns.

The Jaguars announced, via the team’s official Twitter account, that Weaver will hold a news conference at noon ET. The Jags also stated the team would not practice Tuesday.

The second head coach in team history, Del Rio’s job security had been tenuous considering that Weaver stated the coach needed to make the playoffs this year to secure a 10th season in Jacksonville. The Jaguars were essentially eliminated with Sunday’s 20-13 loss to Houston.

Following the game Weaver was asked if a choice had been produced on Del Rio’s coaching future.

“Now is not the time,” Weaver stated Sunday. “That’s for one more day.”

The Jaguars, who are struggling to sell tickets, host a Monday night game against San Diego.

Hired by the Jaguars in 2003, Del Rio finishes his profession in Jacksonville with a 69-73 overall record, including a 1-two mark in the postseason. His team hasn’t produced the playoffs because 2007, when Jacksonville completed 11-5 and qualified as a wild card.

Given the scenario, the pool of coaches wanting to come to Jacksonville was little, so Del Rio had few alternatives although rebuilding his staff. Del Rio hinted this season that his hands were tied in terms of what he could do to assemble the greatest staff.

Fans have been clamoring for his departure for years, with several calling for him to be fired following a five-11 finish in 2008. Instead, Weaver parted techniques with personnel chief James “Shack” Harris and chosen Gene Smith the common manager.

The former Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback was in discussions with the Miami Dolphins this week, NFL Network insider Jason La Canfora reported, but a contract didn’t come to fruition, and the team rather signed Sage Rosenfels to replace injured starter Chad Henne on the roster. Not so, says Garrard. He does want to play, just not for the Dolphins under the current set of circumstances, he told ESPN.

“There’s been a lot of speculation about me that I don’t appreciate,” Garrard said Saturday. “I was going to lay low with the media, but I feel I have to defend my name. I just want to make it clear that I’m a football player, I want to be with a team and be with an organization that will be as committed to me as I will be to them.”

Given the Dolphins’ -four record and the lack of guaranteed money they brought to the table, Garrard merely passed on the provide.
