Each time Carolina Panthers linebacker Thomas Davis steps inside the coaching facility at Bank of America Stadium, there’s one thing on his thoughts: Making history.
Davis tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in Week two of the 2011 season for a third time in just a 23-month span, and Panthers trainer Ryan Vermillion lately told the Charlotte Observer that no player in NFL history has come back from 3 ACL surgeries on the same knee.
It’s Davis’ goal to turn out to be the initial.
“Every day I go in I’m looking at it like I’m generating history. That’s my goal,” Davis told the Observer. “From now on when you see specific factors occur to guys, particular injuries, there will be a lot more teams that will be more willing to give guys possibilities based on a guy they can point out, ‘Look at Thomas Davis down in Carolina. He came back from three to the exact same knee and he’s able to play, and he’s playing at a high level.’ “
Davis’ most current operation was performed by renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews. The Observer reported Andrews rebuilt Davis’ ACL by utilizing the patellar tendon from his left knee.
“The knee is solid as a rock,” Davis said. “Those had been (Andrews’) words.”
Davis isn’t the only Panthers linebacker spending his days rehabbing a season-ending injury. All-Pro Jon Beason tore his Achilles’ tendon in the course of the 2011 season opener and told the Observer he’s aiming to return to the field for the Panthers’ summer-school practices in June.
The return of Beason and Davis, if the Panthers elect to bring him back, would be a boost for a defense that set franchise records in points, yards and passing yards permitted final season.

ALAMEDA, Calif. — Oakland Raiders owner Mark Davis stated Tuesday that he doesn’t plan to sell the franchise, but he kept open the possibility of relocating.
The Raiders have been trying to get a new stadium and have been continually linked to a return to Los Angeles, which has two groups vying to build a new stadium and land a team.
In response to a reporter’s question, Davis said he was open to the proposed joint facility with the 49ers in Santa Clara and has spent a lot more than a year working on stadium options, but that if a thing can’t be accomplished in the Bay Location, “something will get done somewhere.”

Al Davis, the iconic owner of the Oakland Raiders, died Saturday, a senior-ranking team official confirmed. He was 82.
In the course of Davis’ historic 48-year run with the Raiders, he won three Super Bowls and enjoyed 28 winning seasons, including a stretch of 16 from 1965 through 1980.
“Al Davis’s passion for football and his influence on the game were extraordinary,” NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell stated in a statement released by the league. “He defined the Raiders and contributed to pro football at every level. The respect he commanded was evident in the way that people listened cautiously every single time he spoke. He is a accurate legend of the game whose impact and legacy will forever be part of the NFL.”
The Raiders arrived in Houston on Friday night in preparation for Sunday’s game against the Houston Texans, and Davis’ death clearly is a huge blow to members of the Oakland franchise. In the conversation I had with a team official, he was extremely somber and described it as a difficult time.
NFL meetings will take place in Houston on Monday and Tuesday, and Davis’ passing undoubtedly will dominate the gathering of team owners and league executives.
Davis, one of the most critical figures in NFL history, is ideal recognized as a rebel, a man who established a team whose silver-and-black colors and pirate logo symbolized his attitude toward authority, both on the field and off.
It was Davis’ rebellious spirit, that willingness to buck the establishment, that helped turn the NFL into the establishment in sports — the most productive sports league in American history.

It’s been a rough week for 49ers tackle Anthony Davis. On Sunday against Philly, Davis was beat by Jason Babin twice on sacks.
The league added insult to injury Thursday when they notified Davis he owed $ 25,000 for a pair of leg whipping penalties in the game, according to Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com.
Babin, who also fined for hitting Alex Smith, went off about the problem on Twitter:
“Attn:Guy at the NFL that decides on who and how much players get fined Stop being a puppet, if you want to protect QB’s, get far better linemen,” Babin wrote.
The 49ers probably agree with the sentiment. They need an upgrade from Davis.
