Clinton Portis has finally emerged from hiding.
It should be no surprise that the Patriots, of all teams, uncovered him. They are the patron saints of player workouts.
Ian Rapoport of the Boston Herald reports that Portis worked out for the Patriots Friday. New England has hosted a long list of player workouts over the final month.
They signed a few of the players. Most of the veterans, like T.J. Houshmandzadeh and Darren Sharper, stay no cost agents. Portis seems to be in the category of “due diligence.”
Running back is maybe New England’s deepest position and we can’t picture they would contemplate signing Portis unless injuries hit.

It is very unlikely that you will see an NFL team pay million to a running back who has played in just 13 games in the past two seasons, has run for just three touchdowns and less than 750 yards during that time, and will turn 30 before the scheduled start of the following season.
And it won’t be happening to the Washington Redskins. They cut Clinton Portis on Monday, ending their seven-year relationship, one that left Portis just 648 yards shy of one of Hall of Famer John Riggins’ franchise record.
Portis’ contract called for the Redskins to pay him million over the next three seasons, including .254 million for 2011. But the team decided that would be way too much cash spent on a running back with 2,230 carries in his career.
Portis played in just five games in 2010. A torn groin muscle ruined his hopes of a more productive year. FANTASY ANALYSIS: I don’t think Portis is done as he looked impressive at times when he was actually playing last season. He suffered the groin injury in week four at Philadelphia, but he looked surprisingly fresh in that game before going down. He’ll have to find a place, probably as a backup, for much less money. Keiland Williams, James Davis and Ryan Torain remain on Washington’s RB depth chart. The Redskins will certainly be looking to add somebody to the mix.

“Southeast Jerome” is officially gone for good. As well as “Dolla Bill” and “Sheriff Gonna Getcha.” Clinton Portis was released by the Washington Redskins on Monday, ending a charismatic and sometimes contentious seven-year stay that, for a while at least, made him the face of the franchise.
