Posted by Mike Florio on February 25, 2012, 12:48 AM EST
Several of you have pointed out a report that Browns G.M. Tom Heckert has had “serious” surgery, which has kept him from attending the Scouting Combine. The info comes from WTAM radio, the team’s flagship station in Cleveland.
The Browns are sharing no details about the situation. “Tom’s private medical concerns are his private affair and not for the club to comment on,” Browns spokesman Neal Gulkis told Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer. “As we said yesterday, he’s performing fine.”
We’re told that Heckert is indeed carrying out nicely, and that he’s not in Indianapolis just since he’s not however in a position to travel.
We wish him a speedy and complete recovery.

The Browns have talked this week about acquiring operating back Montario Hardesty into the mix a lot more in an effort to lighten Peyton Hillis’ load, but the team won’t need Hardesty to begin.
Coach Pat Shurmur confirmed Friday he fully expected Hillis to start in spite of listing him as questionable on the injury report with an illness.
“He just wasn’t feeling nicely,” said Shurmur via the Cleveland Plain-Dealer. “It just takes place this time of year, so we felt the greatest course of action was just to send him residence. We’ll see how he’s performing, but whatever it is, we do not really feel like it’s going to affect him on Sunday. My thoughts are that he’ll be there.”
Hillis left Friday to rest and get far more fluids. The team talked about wanting to rest Hillis much more in the course of the typical season, but haven’t followed via therefore far. With Brandon Jackson hurt, Hillis has 57 touches (47 carries) in two weeks. He’s scored twice, but is averaging only 3.4 yards-per-carry against the Bengals and Colts.
(And with that, I’m back at practice following my most outstanding interruption this week. Elly and I thank you for all the west wishes.)

Although the rest of the football globe waits for the NFL and NFLPA* to get their act together, the Browns are playing football.
And given that there isn’t a lot else going on in the football world this Tuesday, we thought we’d bring you some notes from the fourth “Camp Colt [McCoy], courtesy of Mary Kay-Cabot of the Cleveland Plain-Dealer, who is on the scene in Austin, Texas.
1. About 30 players showed up for the sessions. They are staying at a resort in Austin, whilst McCoy brings them around to his favorite barbecue places. The first day compromised of a lot of classroom/tape function, then two hours of practice in 103 degree weather.
two. Rookies Phil Taylor and Owen Marecic met their teammates for the initial time. Taylor worked out separately like most of the defense during the offseason, but this was a full-squad session. Marecic was nonetheless in classes at Stanford.
three. Cornerback Sheldon Brown is coming off rotator cuff surgery and is limited in practice. He says he’ll be ready when he wants to be.
4. This really nicely may possibly be our last players-only practice report in a while. Possibly a decade. Let’s hope so.

Here’s a strange story from the “What may well have been?” department: Jim Tressel, the lately departed Ohio State head coach, could have left Ohio State five years ago to coach the Cleveland Browns.
The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports that Jim Brown, who was an executive adviser to Browns owner Randy Lerner, contacted an individual close to Tressel to gauge his interest in coaching the Browns in 2006.
Tressel apparently wasn’t interested, and it’s not clear whether or not the Browns were ready to offer him the job or just wanted to see if he may possibly be interested, but it is fascinating to think about what may have been distinct if Tressel had coached the Browns.
Would Tressel have been a productive NFL coach, like Jimmy Johnson? Or would he have failed miserably and swiftly gone back to the NCAA with his tail between his legs, like Bobby Petrino?
And would Ohio State be in the very same mess it is in now if yet another man had coached the team the last five years? Or would some other coach have achieved the exact same level of on-field success for the Buckeyes, without the off-field scandal?
We’ll in no way know. And it’s possibly secure to say Tressel will by no means once again have the opportunity to rebuff an NFL owner’s advances.

Posted on 11 June 2011. Tags: “are, Browns, Cleveland Plain Dealer, Colt Mccoy, consideration, days, Delhomme’s, Getty, getty images, Images, Jake, Jake Delhomme, numbered”, quarterback, Seneca Wallace

Although it comes as no surprise contemplating Jake Delhomme’s recent performance and $ five.4 million base salary for 2011, Tony Grossi of the Cleveland Plain Dealer confirmed in a Friday online video that the 10-year veteran quarterback’s days with the Browns “are numbered.”
“I believe he knows it, the team knows it,” added Grossi, who predicted that the Browns’ third-string quarterback would come from the “undrafted ranks” or “maybe a very low-profile veteran free agent.”
Colt McCoy is the Browns’ projected starter, and Seneca Wallace was re-signed in March to back him up.
Delhomme, 36, threw two touchdown passes and seven interceptions in five appearances last year. Dating back to the 2008 playoffs, he has a beyond ugly 11:30 TD-to-INT ratio.
Grossi ended his video segment on Delhomme by opining that the longtime Panthers starter “is accomplished as a legitimate beginning competitor.”

No matter how short training camp is, it would be stunning if Colt McCoy wasn’t Cleveland’s beginning quarterback when the Browns commence their season.
Seneca Wallace, who re-signed with the team this offseason, won’t give the job up without having a fight. Wallace sees the switch to a West Cast offense under new coach Pat Shurmur as an advantage for him.
“It’s fantastic to know that you’re going into a situation where you’ve already got the upper hand on a lot of that stuff,” Wallace told Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain-Dealer. “Terminology is quite comparable to what I’m utilized to and that’s one of the greatest points.”
Wallace joked that possibly he’ll maintain some secrets to himself.
“Yeah, I can’t disclose every little thing to [McCoy],” he stated. “I’m still trying to go out there and play for my position, you know? But I’m not going to hold everything back from him. If there’s some thing he wants to know about the offense, I’d certainly be willing to attempt to share and support him out as greatest I can.”
The Browns will presumably cut Jake Delhomme soon after the lockout. We doubt at this point the Browns will add any true competition for Wallace as McCoy’s backup. Even if Wallace doesn’t very sound ready to be a backup just yet.
“Colt is a younger kid and he’s from Texas and individuals know him,” Wallace stated. “He really should get the opportunity to be the starter and I’m not worried about that. But I’m comfortable with this system and I’m going to prepare each day like I’m the starter. That’s what I’ve got to do.”

Posted on 08 June 2011. Tags: Browns, Burress, Cleveland Plain Dealer, Colt Mccoy, Getty, getty images, Giant, mary kay cabot, Plaxico Burress, pursue, receiver, Steeler, won’t

As the potential suitors for receiver Plaxico Burress plot a post-lockout run at the former Steeler and Giant, word is trickling out as to the teams that aren’t interested.
The latest? Per Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the Browns.
Which makes sense, since Plaxico probably isn’t interested in Cleveland.
And that’s not a slap at the city or the team. The fit just doesn’t seem to be there. He’s going to want to play for a contender and/or for a team with an established quarterback and/or in a situation where he will catch a lot of passes. Right now, Cleveland doesn’t fit any of those categories.
Sure, they could become a contender and Colt McCoy could be the real deal, but there are safer bets out there for Burress.
