“Camp Alex” wrapped up in the Bay Region Thursday, with 49ers quarterback Alex Smith delivering a final message to his teammates as component of his role as quarterback/coach/strength coach/shaman of the 49ers organization.
“We’re behind. . . . . The longer this [lockout] goes on, the more we’re screwed,” Smith told the squad via Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee.
We agree. Teams with new coaching staffs are going to be hit the hardest. That’s why having some continuity with personnel helps, and partly why Smith will return to San Francisco once again.
Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com writes that Smith decided to re-sign with the 49ers prior to April 29, when the lockout was briefly lifted. (Smith hasn’t really re-signed however.)
Smith also addressed his recent remarks about Michael Crabtree, when he seemingly criticized the receiver for not working out with the team. Smith stated he referred to as Crabtree to apologize, and was disappointed in how the remarks sounded, according to the Santa Rosa Press Democrat.
Rookie Colin Kaepernick did not throw at this week’s practices and isn’t yet 100% recovered from leg surgery.
That’s another reminder that the 49ers are Alex Smith’s team for now, for much better or worse.

The San Francisco 49ers would welcome back quarterback Alex Smith if the 2005 first overall pick wants to return. General manager Trent Baalke said Wednesday that the 49ers have extended an “olive branch” to Smith to come back to the only NFL team he has ever known. All that started before the NFL locked out the players in the ongoing labor dispute.
