Bill Parcells: ‘I Don’t Think’ I Have Urge to Coach Again

Bill Parcells told Sports Illustrated on Monday that he doesn’t think he’ll return to coaching, amid reports that he could take over the New Orleans Saints on an interim basis.

Debate: Tuna time in New Orleans?

“Do I have the bug?” Parcells stated. “I don’t assume so.”

Parcells said he has passed on two opportunities to coach once more since leaving the Dallas Cowboys in 2006.

Saints coach Sean Payton planned to speak with Parcells about having the Hall of Fame finalist fill in as the team’s interim coach for the upcoming season, Fox Sports insider and NFL Network contributor Jay Glazer reported Monday. Payton was suspended by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell for the whole 2012 season for his role in the team’s “bounty” scandal.

A league source told NFL Network insider Jason La Canfora that the Saints are thinking about bringing on Parcells, but that it’s unlikely the team would hire him. Parcells, 70, also is only one of numerous alternatives the team is weighing, La Canfora reported.

At the NFL Annual Meeting in Palm Beach, Fla., Goodell confirmed the Saints would be permitted to employ a coach from outside the franchise, so lengthy as he isn’t at present on staff with an additional team.

Parcells assembled a 172-130-1 record, such as two Super Bowl titles with the New York Giants and another Super Bowl look with the New England Patriots, in 22 years as an NFL head coach. He is the only coach to take four various franchises to the playoffs.

Parcells 1st retired from coaching after leaving the New York Jets in 1999, but he joined the Cowboys in 2003 ahead of leaving once more 3 years later.

Right after getting named a Pro Football Hall of Fame finalist in 2012, Parcells would have to wait yet another 5 years to be viewed as for Hall of Fame induction if he returns to coaching in any capacity, Hall of Fame vice president of communications Joe Horrigan confirmed to NFL.com.

We Meet Again: Top Spot in AFC East at Stake for Jets, Pats

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — A Boston Red Sox cap hangs in Calvin Pace’s locker, a curious accessory for a guy who seriously dislikes his team’s subsequent opponent: the New England Patriots.

Don’t worry Jets fans, he’s no traitor.

“When it comes to baseball, I like particular players, and with the Red Sox, I like Carl Crawford and Adrian Gonzalez,” the New York linebacker mentioned with a big smile Friday. “I’m not a Red Sox fan. So, for anybody who’s reading or occurs to see me out with the Red Sox hat on, I’m not a fan of the team. I’m a fan of certain players. So, I get a hat for the guys I like.”

Just as he did for Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp. He also owns a Mets cap, and thinks they really should re-sign shortstop Jose Reyes.

“I’m a bandwagon fan when it comes to certain sports,” Pace stated, laughing. “I’m not going to lie. I am.”

Pace has a Yankees cap, too, and a fool-proof strategy for the Bronx Bombers to win their 28th World Series title next year.

“The Yankees should sign Albert Pujols and put him at third base,” Pace said. “People have been killing A-Rod, so you put Pujols at third, Alex Rodriguez at DH and then you have Mark Teixeira, Robinson Cano and Derek Jeter? Man. You know the Yankees would invest the funds.”

Which is why Red Sox president and CEO Larry Lucchino when known as the Yankees “the Evil Empire,” a label Pace employed Friday to describe the Patriots. Not that New England has outspent its opponents. The Patriots are just not looked upon too favorably in these parts, mostly simply because of all the winning they’ve done.

This is 1 of the NFL’s most intense rivalries and the next round will play out Sunday night when the Jets host the Patriots in a showdown for initial location in the AFC East.

“It ought to be a great game,” Jets coach Rex Ryan mentioned. “It’s virtually like Ali-Frazier.”

They’ve been so evenly matched by means of the years, the teams are tied 52-52-1 in their series heading into this game.

“I’m positive this will be a wonderful atmosphere down there,” Patriots coach Bill Belichick stated. “I’m seeking forward to it: massive division game on the road, teams that know each and every other nicely. This will be a very good football game. I feel everyone’s seeking forward to it.”

Ryan is a massive boxing fan and has brought up classic bouts ahead of big games such as this 1.

“Those were wonderful fights,” Ryan stated of the Ali-Frazier bouts. “I bear in mind that growing up and points, so hopefully this can be that kind of game and hopefully we’ll end up on best. Whether or not we’re Ali or Frazier, I don’t know.”

Lately, the Jets and Patriots have fought to a draw, with each winning 3 of the last six meetings — even though 1 of New York’s victories came in the playoffs last January.

“The only one that was horrible was that Monday night massacre where we got knocked out in the initial round,” mentioned Ryan, referring to New England’s 45-3 victory last season. “But generally you have two great teams going at it.”

Not only that, but a pair of teams with lots of history. The Jets and Patriots are two of the original AFL franchises, but many of the present negative feelings started in 1997 when Bill Parcells left New England following a loss in the Super Bowl to become the Jets coach. Running back Curtis Martin followed Parcells a year later and became 1 of the very best players in Jets history and a feasible Hall of Famer.

Then, there was that bizarre day in 1999, when Belichick was all set to replace Parcells as Jets coach. Instead, he bailed following one day as the “H.C. of the N.Y.J.” and became the coach of the Patriots.

“At that point in time, that scenario, I did what I felt like I necessary to do and I don’t have any regrets about that,” Belichick stated Friday. “Certainly a lot of issues could have been handled differently or whatever, but anyway, it doesn’t matter now.”

Vikings Will Camp in Mankato, Again

Vikings will camp in Mankato, again

They wanted to make a choice by July 17.  But July 17 came and went without a labor deal.

Now that the 17-year-old champagne is flowing (I poured mine down the drain), the Vikings have decided that they’ll indeed return to Mankato State University for training camp.

It’ll be the 46th time the Vikings prepare for the season there.

“We wanted to prolong our decision as lengthy as possible in an effort to preserve our training camp tradition of practicing in front of Vikings fans in Mankato,” Vikings president Mark Wilf said in a statement released by the team. “The Vikings appreciate the patience and flexibility shown by Minnesota State University and the Mankato community in producing this work, and we look forward to returning to our training camp house in August.”

It’s much more important than ever, in our view, for teams to have training camp at an off-site location.  With the offseason program lost and a premium placed on acquiring prepared speedily, the focus, convenience, and camaraderie of having everybody in one place makes lots of sense.

As one head coach lately explained it to me, the fact that the coaching staff has nearby rooms with beds in them makes life a lot simpler than sleeping on a cot or an air mattress.

Rex Ryan Is Already Giving Fiery Speeches Again

Rex Ryan is already giving fiery speeches again

Although we wait for the NFLPA* Executive Committee to start (and finish) their meeting Monday, we have maybe the clearest sign however that football is coming back.

Rex Ryan is already trying to rally the troops once more.

Ryan delivered a “fiery, training camp-type speech” to 150 Jets staffers on Monday morning in New Jersey, according to Wealthy Cimini of ESPNNewYork.com.

Ryan spoke after Jets owner Woody Johnson, who promised all staffers that lost wages would be repaid by the team instantly.

That news is expected, but welcome. We expect to hear teams around the league to make the exact same pledge to those staffers who were unfairly punished this offseason by owners who didn’t properly prepare for the lockout.

Tony Romo Finishes Second Again at American Century

Tony Romo finishes second again at American Century

For a although, Tony Romo suffered the slings and arrows of those who said he couldn’t win a playoff game.  Now celebrity golf fans will say he can’t win the large 1 in their sport either.

(Yes, we’re kidding.  Nobody takes celebrity golf that seriously.  We think.)

Romo completed second at the American Century Golf in Lake Tahoe for the second straight year, this time barely missing the title.  Actor Jake Wagner won the tournament, with the key sequence a made birdie putt at No. 17 even though Romo, playing with Wagner, missed his putt.

All in all, the finish can’t diminish a strong offseason for Romo.
