San Francisco (NFL/Newsfeed) – Two generations of star NFL quarterbacks combined in San Francisco on Friday night as Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady joined Joe Montana, Steve Young and Jim Plunkett at a charity occasion hosted by NBC’s Bob Costas.
That’s eight Super Bowl MVP awards among the 5 of them, if you’re keeping score.
Brady and Rodgers, who grew up in the Bay area, both talked of childhoods spent idolizing Montana and Young.
“We had been pretty high from the prime of the stadium,” Brady mentioned, according to CSNBayArea.com. “We required binoculars to see what was going on, but there was nothing a lot more thrilling than getting at the games and watching Joe and Steve. Any young kid expanding up at that time wanted to be like those two guys. It’s really an honor be to sitting here with these two.”
It was also a uncommon double sighting of Montana and Young, who engaged in possibly the greatest quarterback controversy of all. The two had been seated next to every single other on stage.
The occasion was held at UC San Francisco and organized by former 49ers offensive lineman Harris Barton. It was expected to raise up to $ 750,000 for tumor study at UCSF, 1st Tee of San Francisco, Monterey County and Silicon Valley, and Champion Charities.

Green Bay (NFL/Newsfeed) – The Green Bay Packers picked up a quarterback in the NFL draft, but it wasn’t Colt McCoy. Seventh-round choose B.J. Coleman is a guy the Packers will develop for the future, but Graham Harrell is the backup of the present.
Common manager Ted Thompson is not interested in bringing in a veteran to displace Harrell.
“I don’t think you just say, ‘Hey, I need a veteran backup,’” coach Mike McCarthy told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel on Saturday. “We have the MVP in Aaron Rodgers as our No. 1, and I really feel like we have, truly, 3 candidates to compete for two spots, or possibly 3.”
Make no error: Harrell is the No. 2, with Coleman and former Arena Leaguer Nick Hill battling for the third spot. Rodgers has typically spoken about how confident he is that Harrell — a Texas Tech item — can deal with the job. Harrell was lightly thought of coming out of school, viewed as a “system QB” created by Mike Leach.
Contemplating McCarthy’s track record creating quarterbacks, from Rodgers to Matt Flynn, we’ll give Harrell the benefit of the doubt.

McCarthy says Packers tackling must improve
Posted by Mike Florio on January 18, 2012, 11:11 PM EST
The 49ers have gotten to where they are right now (i.e., the NFC title game) in part because of their ability to tackle. The Packers have gotten to where they are right now (i.e., home) because, in the opinion of their head coach, of their inability to tackle.
“The tackling just was not there all year,” McCarthy said in press conference to end the season, via the Associated Press. “Without getting into the specific statistics, we did not tackle well enough as a football team, from start to finish. It’s something that’s emphasized every single day in practice and something that [defensive coordinator] Dom [Capers] and I talked a lot about today.”
The team made it to 15-1 despite the tackling issues. But that wasn’t enough to secure a home playoff win.
“Our football team will improve,” McCarthy said. “I believe in what our coaching staff gives us during the offseason program. History reflects that, and we will be adding another significant draft class to this football team. So as far as free agency, veteran free agency and all of that, those are really hypothetical situations. I’m sure it’s fun for everybody to play G.M. But we’ll go through the process like we always do.”
Though plenty of Packers fans expected another Super Bowl win, the best news is that the team will continue to be competitive for as long as Aaron Rodgers is the team’s quarterback. That’s all any team can hope for – to be in the mix every year.
While that may not make Packers fans feel any better about a season of unfulfilled expectations, they’ll rediscover their optimism when everyone’s record re-sets to 0-0.

Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy wouldn’t say Friday if quarterback Aaron Rodgers will sit out Sunday’s typical-season finale against the Detroit Lions to rest up for the playoffs.
“The most essential factor with Aaron is he’s ready to play,” McCarthy said. “It’s crucial for the quarterbacks we repped all three of them this week. So I’d like to see all 3 of them play in the game, is the initial program as we began the week.”
Rodgers didn’t shed any light on if he would take any snaps.
“I’m going to leave it up to Mike,” he said.
The playoff-bound Lions (ten-five) can secure the No. 5 seed in the NFC playoffs by winning at Green Bay for the first time considering that 1991, but the Packers (14-1) don’t have anything riding on the final score against their longtime rivals, getting clinched the No. 1 seed and residence-field benefit.
“It ain’t the finish of the world,” mentioned Packers tight finish Jermichael Finley, who’s probable to play Sunday with a knee injury. “We’ve nonetheless got them playoffs.”
If Rodgers sits, the Packers would count on a mixture of Matt Flynn and Graham Harrell to lead the NFL’s best-ranked scoring offense. Rodgers would miss just his second game in four seasons as the starter.
Flynn, a fourth-year pro, produced his only NFL commence Dec. 19, 2010, with Rodgers out due to the fact of a concussion. Flynn played nicely in the game, a prime-time matchup on the road against the heavily favored New England Patriots, who hung on for a 31-27 win.
“I want to see Matt Flynn play like he did in New England, but take it a step additional — win the game,” McCarthy stated.
Three other key offensive players were ruled out: operating back James Starks (knee/ankle), receiver/kick returner Randall Cobb (groin) and receiver Greg Jennings (knee). The Packers also listed proper tackle Bryan Bulaga (knee) as doubtful. Linebacker Clay Matthews (ankle) and cornerback Charles Woodson (knee) are questionable.
Defensive end Ryan Pickett and left tackle Chad Clifton were each listed as probable and are expected to play. Pickett missed the last two games simply because of a concussion. Clifton hasn’t played given that suffering a hamstring injury Oct. 9 and then a back injury throughout his rehab perform.

The NFC playoffs will go by way of Lambeau
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on December 25, 2011, 11:28 PM EST
The Packers produced the Super Bowl the challenging way last year. The path back to a title game looks much less difficult this time around.
Green Bay’s 35-21 victory more than the Bears on Sunday night achieved a lot. It clinched homefield benefit for the playoffs. It knocked the Bears out of the playoff mix. It also sent the Falcons to the playoffs as a wild card team.
Barring some big upsets, the Packers, 49ers, and Saints must be the best three seeds in the NFC playoffs. Green Bay should now keep away from San Francisco and New Orleans until the NFC Championship, which will be played in Lambeau Field if the Packers can just win in the Divisional Round.
Sunday night’s game was a reminder how tough it will be to win in Green Bay in January. The Bears truly did a lot of items appropriate in the first half and cut the lead to 14-ten just right after halftime.
And they nonetheless got blown out.
The margin for error when facing the Packers is so slow. Positive, the Packers defense offers up a lot of yards and is weak at the point of attack. They also tend to intercept a couple of passes each and every week, which provides Aaron Rodgers additional possessions.
Giving Rodgers added aid on this night was a death wish. He threw 5 touchdowns on only 28 attempts, for 293 yards.
For the year, Rodgers has 45 touchdowns and six interceptions. Drew Brees has been fantastic, but he has four games with multiple picks this year. Rodgers has none.
Rodgers makes it look effortless. He throws 55-yard strikes to Jordy Nelson just as smoothly as 1-yard scoring tosses into tight windows. He even eluded Brian Urlacher and Lance Briggs on one run to maintain 1 scoring drive alive.
Brees has been excellent, but Rodgers has played the position as nicely as any quarterback can.
The Packers, led by Rodgers, won the standard season. No one could beat the Packers in Lambeau.
Some team will have to upset the champs on their residence turf in the postseason or the Packers are headed back to the Super Bowl.

Posted on 01 December 2011. Tags: Aaron Rodgers, better, Brady, can't, news, Nfl, Packers', Patriots, play, quarterback, Rodgers, than, the Packers, Tom Brady, way
Tom Brady knows a factor or two about what it takes to quarterback a team via a excellent regular season, leading the Patriots to a 16- campaign in 2007 and falling one helmet catch shy of football immortality.
This season, Aaron Rodgers and the Packers are threatening to put together a Patriots-esque run, and Brady addressed Green Bay’s try at a ideal season on Wednesday’s edition of Showtime’s “Inside the NFL.”
“It’s so impressive when you watch a team that can string together that a lot of victories going all the way back to last season,” Brady mentioned, through the Boston Herald. “It really tells you what the character and the make-up of the players on that team are. So them acquiring off to the start off that they’ve gotten off to is extremely impressive. And the way Aaron’s playing, it’s impossible to play the quarterback position any better than he is playing it appropriate now.”
Rodgers has a 128. quarterback rating through 11 games to go along with three,475 passing yards and 33 touchdowns to 4 interceptions. Sports Illustrated lately attempted to put Rodger’s year in context of some other prolific passing seasons from the past decade, and Rodgers’ perform compares favorably with the best of Brady, Peyton Manning and Drew Brees.
In certain, Brady’s 2007 numbers by means of the season’s initial 11 games almost are identical to Rodgers’ stats from this year. Brady had a 127.9 QB rating and three,439 passing yards, but bested Rodgers with 39 TDs.
Rodgers wasn’t the only signal-caller on Brady’s mind throughout his Television spot, even so, as he also commented on Manning’s absence from this weekend’s Patriots-Colts game.
“The NFL misses guys like that,” Brady stated. “I know how significantly football indicates to Peyton. He and I have developed a real friendship over the years. I don’t forget when I got hurt, he was 1 of the first individuals that named me and kind of expressed his disappointment that I wouldn’t be out there. And I feel the identical way. And hopefully he’ll be back out there next year.”

Packers stand alone atop the NFL
Posted by Michael David Smith on November 14, 2011, 11:36 PM EST
Reasonable men and women can disagree about the identity of the second-greatest team in the NFL. Possibly it’s the 49ers or the Patriots or the Steelers or the Texans or the Saints or the Giants, or maybe any one of half a dozen other teams that appear fantastic 1 week and negative the subsequent in the topsy-turvy NFL.
But no one can dispute that the Packers stand far above the rest of the league.
The defending Super Bowl champions did it once more on Monday night, pummeling the Minnesota Vikings 45-7 to increase to 9-. The Packers, who squeaked into the playoffs in 2010 prior to going on a run in the postseason and winning the title, are a better team this year than they had been last year, and right now they appear like overwhelming favorites to repeat as champions.
Though there had been some concerns in recent weeks that the Packers’ defense wasn’t up to par, that undoubtedly wasn’t the case on Monday night. Green Bay pitched a shutout in the 1st half, and when Minnesota finally got on the board in the third quarter, it was only due to the fact the Vikings recovered a muffed punt at the 14-yard line. The Vikings’ offense couldn’t do something on Monday night. The Packers’ defense dominated.
And as for the Packers’ offense? Aaron Rodgers might be playing quarterback far better than everyone has ever played the position. Against Minnesota, Rodgers completed 23 of 30 passes for 250 yards, with four touchdowns and no interceptions, prior to becoming pulled from the game in the fourth quarter to give backup Matt Flynn some playing time. Rodgers has had a passer rating greater than 110 each and every single game this year, and he remains on pace to set a new NFL record for the highest passer rating in a season. He’s searching like a runaway winner of the MVP award.
Could the Packers go 16-? Could they join the 1972 Miami Dolphins as the only undefeated, untied league champions in NFL history? The odds are nonetheless against that: The NFL is so unpredictable that even a seemingly inevitably has a rough week.
But it’s hard to figure which team would beat the Packers. There’s no one even close to as great as Green Bay.

Their passing and catching in games that matter could probably use some improvement as well.
This is news? Has a coach ever been satisfied with his team’s tackling?
Don’t worry Mike the “owners” and “stockholders” will address that problem in the offseason.
Not just tackling. Their fundamentals in all aspects of defense need to improve. It’s good when it looks like you’re playing 7-7 drills when you’re on offense. Not when you’re on defense.
When’s the Packers next game?
The Packers need to revamp their secondary with younger and more athletic players. They could not cover anybody all year. The linebackers and d-line are not bad; however, the secondary was just atrocious. When the offense was not on their game on Sunday, the defense was finally exposed and it was ugly. There were wide open receivers running around all game and there was nothing the packers could do about it. I think a big part of it was that the Giants receivers were just more athletic than they were. They could not play man coverage, and when they attempted to play zone Eli just picked them apart.
So the fumbles were okay?
Its football u shouldn’t be a pro if ur not gunna tackle.
Also, catching passes in the playoffs might help.
Tackling, covering, getting pressure, protecting… oh the things that great players can cover up for so long. Ask the Colts..
cullen jenkins? ted thompson’s bad….what was the deal with all the zone coverage?? when shields and tramon flourished in man last year….scheme changed this year…we looked soft? WHY? the offense had a bad game but everyone could see what was happening with them…..the d was not solved all year……wtf!!!! it seems like the team put a higher priority on not commiting penaltys wich makes sense considering the way the league is changing……watching the 49 ers game they were not calling anything….the league is protecting their ass during the regular season but seems to turn a blind eye during the playoffs because they are getting a better product…ditka and his bs are to blame for this…..as a man and someone who has served his country honorable i do not get his logic……he portrays himself as a tough guy but asks for hand outs from the nfl for himself and his buddies he played with…..you knew what you were getting into….everyone has to suffer because he feels entightled to something that is flourishing now but wasnt when he was banging…..give me a break……..pathetic
should have addressed this problem during that bye week!!
Tackle schmackle…drops and fumbles ended this season. We knew the defense was suspect from the get go. The offense pooped on themselves and game over.
Start by bringing back Jenkins from philly. Franchise Flynn. Package him with our 1st round pick to move up to get a stud OLB, maybe that kid from Alabama. Not sure where he’s projected in the 1st round. Draft some DB’s in the 2nd and 3rd rounds.
Damn straight.
Really Mike! As if nobody noticed. We really needed you to mention that to the media. Take the marbles out of your mouth.
Thats Not the reason they lost.
1. Aaron Rodgers is Over Rated, Plain and simple, He got lucky last Year with great match-ups and the time where everyone was week. They didnt play anyone outside of the Saints in an time where the league just came back from a Lockout
2. The PACKERS D has always been bad against the Pass against good QB’S. Its been that way the last 3+ years but every body ingored that concept
3. They are a Dome Team, not and Outdoor team which they got lucky to play in a lot last year
The seasons over dummy! You let your QB take 3 weeks off at the end of the season, every team that has every done that lose’s! Stupid is stupid does…
As must their offensive tackle play. See what I did there? Frankly I’ve never seen a 15-1 team with so many holes. Then again I’ve never seen a 15-1 team get whooped at home like that in a playoff game. What, too soon? At least the saints put up a fight ON THE ROAD the last two years at Seattle and sf. Man if you’re going to get the #1 seed doing something with it. What a waste of a year.
The wide receivers also need to catch, and someone besides Clay Matthews needs to get to the quarterback (BJ Raji anyone?)
Aaron Rodgers like Drew Brees did everything in their power to win their games.
In Brees case poor turnovers in the special teams and inability to get to the quarterback was their downfall.
Rodgers couldn’t get anyone to catch the call or get to Eli Manning
Rodgers QB rating under 80 yielded both losses this season. He admitted not playing well in both games.
More ignominious, Brett Favre earned a 70 QB rating in collective playoff games after 1998 (i.e., after the loss to Denver in the Super Bowl).
In fact I admit I was wrong in thinking Brees should be MVP. Man the packers are a 3-13 team without discount double choke at the helm. Matt Flynn couldnt play the lions every week.
Look at the Patriots they got upset last year in the same style and now they got the afc championship game at home this week. I would still say the packers are the favorite to win their division next year.
If the tackling was not there all year, it’s the fault of the coaching staff, which ultimately means McCarthy.
And just out of curiosity, what has the defense been doing in practice since August or so? When did they think they’d get around to working on that tackling?
HUGE failure on the part of the Green Bay staff. Despite what all the cheeseheads think about their “dynasty,” you don’t get that many opportunities to go to a Superbowl. To blow it because of lack of fundamentals is inexcusable.
And the pass rush, and the coverage…
Besides turnovers, the Packers defense wasn’t there all season.
That being said, defending a championship is the hardest task in sports. Congrats to the Pack on a great season and for providing some awesome games. Rodgers is fun to watch. If they play D again like they did in 2010 they will be that much more difficult to stop. Sometimes the O has bad days and the D needs to have their backs, that didn’t happen last Sunday.
This is the beginning of the end.
Schwartz says: “Yeah, ours too.”
When can the Packers work on their tackling? Aren’t there just 15 padded practices for the 16 game season?
Packers will be eclipsed by the Lions next year, I hope they enjoyed their time at the top last season.
In another season or two this will again be the team to beat, they just need a few more pieces, especially at RB and on D.
at least he isnt blind to their downfalls, a characteristic of a great coach/ leader
The problem on defense was personnel. The problem on offense was dropped passes and a propensity to only really show up for 2-3 quarters every week.
Not the game I watched. I’d have to rank the reasons in this order:
1. 3 lost fumbles by the offense all season long and lost 3 in that game.
2. 3 defenders couldn’t knock down a Hail-Mary pass.
3. 3 rushers were unable to prevent Manning from eating his lunch on the field.
4. 8 dropped passes by receivers.
5. Poor tackling.
Can they fix this defense without looking into free agency? Will Woodson move to safety if Collins is unable to play again?
Q. How do you get to 15-1 regular season with “tackling issues?”
A. Play one of the easiest schedules in the NFL.
Q. How do you lose a game the NFL tried to hand you with BS officiating?
A. “Tackling issues.”
Q. How do you emphasize “tackling issues” every day and not get better?
A. Because the Packers were overrated.
Sorry, hoss, the issues are more systemic than that. Throw your DC under the cheese all you want, but there are other things that could have been improved and the Pack would have won. Droppped balls, less-than-stellar QB play, poor running game, the offensive line breaking down at inopportune times, lethargy due to the off week…and that’s just on offense. The ease of schedule covered up your weaknesses and you chose to ignore them to the detriment of your team’s success.
Stop making excuses…
They should score more points than the other team too. Especially in the playoffs.
Tackling around the league needs to improve. The minimal amount of contact practices isn’t helping.
Something that would have been better to improve on in week 4 Mike…
Something better than, “*bump* Y U no go down?” may be a better approach.
Really?!? I hadn’t noticed that
I wonder how that last game collapse affects the defensive staff with regard to other jobs.
Like is Moss still on the Raider radar???????
The GB defense did unmentionable stuff to canal water this past year…
They need another pass rusher to pair with CMIII or their fate will be the same next year.
In other news, the sun rises in the east, and Rob Lowe continues to say stupid stuff on Twitter.
15-1 and not able to tackle, look out NFL when the packers learn this valuable football skill.
